San Basilio de Palenque Town Private Tour
Just 90 minutes from Cartagena, get to know the first free town in all the Americas, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Walk down dirt roads alongside houses made from wood, cement, and straw.
One of the cultural pillars of Palenque is their creole language, which we will hear spoken and sung by the older local residents. Another is music, which we will learn more about inside the home of legendary artist Rafael Cassiani. Finally, the pillar which is less known, and leaves us with the most questions, is religion. The mix of religious beliefs and practices within the Palenque culture are very unique, such as celebrating death, mourning birth, and living each day as if it were a party.
We will also visit the home of world boxing champion Pambelé, and the central square, which proudly exhibits the statue of Bioho Benkos, founder of Palenque and liberator of slaves in Cartagena.
